The song describes a person who saw a young shepherdess sitting alone feeding her sheep near a mountain. The other shepherds did not know where she was at the time. Her lover, Amyntas, goes looking for her and wanders through the hills playing hide and seek. Eventually he finds her, and when he does, they kiss.
Letra:
Fair Phyllis I saw sitting all alone
Feeding her flock near to the mountain side.
The shepherds knew not,
they knew not whither she was gone,
But after her lover Amyntas hied,
Up and down he wandered
whilst she was missing;
When he found her,
O then they fell a-kissing.

note: 'hied' is a form of the archaic verb 'hie' which means 'to hasten or hurry'


John Farmer (c 1570–c 1605) was an English composer, mainly of madrigals. He is probably one of the less well-known composers of the English Madrigal School. He was under the patronage of Earl of Oxford and he dedicated his collection of canons and his late madrigal volume to his patron. In 1595, Farmer was appointed Organist and Master of Children at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. In 1599, he moved to London and published his only collection of four-part madrigals. One of these was "Fair Phyllis". His work "Diver and sundry Waies of Two Parts in One" displayed his mastery of two-part canon and cantus firmus.

John Farmer uses clever word painting in his works. For example, in 'Fair Phyllis', the opening line is 'Fair Phyllis I saw sitting all alone'. Farmer had only a single male soprano voice sing since she was 'all alone'. Then, to show the flock beside her, three other voices join in and it may represent the sheep. Esta última interpretación me parece especialmente interesante, ya que respeta el tempo original de Bruckner, (adagio moderato), y además incluye una licencia de interpretación que he visto alabada por todos los que comentan el vídeo: El último do, (C) de los bajos ha sido aparentemente y deliberadamente traspuesto a la octava inferior. Imagino que para eso es necesario contar con un bajo capaz de llegar a ese Do, (al que yo nunca he llegado .... hasta ahora). Os trascribo aquí los comentarios a que me refiero:


* @marycary07 Hallo. Die Aufnahme stammt von einer Anthologie von Werken, die meine Studenten studieren. Ich weiß nicht, dem Chor, aber es ist eine sehr schöne Leistung. Der untere C in der Schlussakkord ist wunderbar!

* Ein wunderbares altes stück Chormusik. Am Besten gefällt mir die Basstimme, vor allen Dingen der letzte Ton. Wie bekommt man das nur hin?

* @Bouwwoo Hallo. Das Schlussakkord ist so schön. Ich denke, die Mischung der Stimmen ist subtil und kontrolliert werden

* @Bouwwoo Stimmt. Der Schlussakkord ist wirklich sehr schön. Der Trick, den der Chorleiter verwendet hat, ist allerdings realtiv einfach. Statt der notierten Note singt der Bass den Ton eine Oktave tiefer. Nun kann man sich natürlich darüber streiten, ob Bruckner das so gewollt hätte. Sehr effektvoll und schön ist es aber allemal!
